New Books! For you to order and so on!

Atomic Fez Publishing is delighted to make available the never-been-revealed, true story of the legendary Ponthe Oldenguine! Kept from the knowledge of the public for decades, now you can finally know what really happened in the halls of the BBC’s Broadcasting House in the late 1960s and early-1970s!

Cover by Steve Upham (click to enlarge / close)Written with loving care and attention to details by noted British author Andriew Hœk from notes left on his doorstep one day by a mysterious and smelly individual (who shouted “PORCUPIIIIINE” through the letter-box before running away giggling), Ponthe Oldenguine is the man you’ve been denied any information about. So secret was Mr. Oldenguine’s existence, you may not even be aware how badly you’ve wanted to know everything about him! But now, the story can be told and you can read it for yourself.

Here’s something about the book itself:

If you want a picture of the future, Trunka,
imagine a boot stamping on a cake . . . forever.
Imagine just how glorious that would be.

Ponthe Oldenguine is one part fictional biography of a former television impresario who claims he’s been hounded out of media history, and one part biography of the journalist commissioned to write his story. Where the tales merge, there is madness.

Trade Paperback copies of Ponthe Oldenguine are just $16.99 (Canada/USA) or £9.99 (UK/Others), with pre-orders being taken now. The electronic book (just $9.99 Canadian) will made available on the title’s Official Publishing Date of October 8th 2010.

PITCH BLACK: THE GENRE RIGHTS FAIR AT WORLD HORROR CONVENTION 2010

Logo of World Horror Convention 2010 (Brighton, England)It is common at the World Horror Convention to have ‘Pitch Sessions’, usually involving two or three editors or agents. In keeping with the avowed intent of the organizers of this year’s WHC to run a ground-breaking professional event, World Horror Convention 2010 in Brighton is doing things a bit differently.

Welcome to PITCH BLACK.

For the first time at such an event, authors and anthology editors will have the opportunity to come together with representatives from the international publishing industry and literary agents to sell and buy genre book rights in both the English language and translation. If you have a sure-fire project that you believe could be a commercial success, then you will be able to bring it to PITCH BLACK, Europe’s first-ever Genre Rights Fair, where you will be able to pitch new ideas or sell English and foreign-language rights, as well as audio and e-book rights for existing works. Imagine a mini–Frankfurt– or London International Book Fair dedicated to horror publishing; and not just horror – because the literature of the fantastic covers fantasy, science fiction and dark crime as well.

The Proprietor of Atomic Fez Publishing, Ian Alexander Martin, stated that he was very much looking forward to the event. “Though the budget for this one-man operation is exceedingly limited,” Mr. Martin said, “there’s always a way to make things work for something that really sounds like ‘your kind of thing’, you know.”

Among those publishers and agents participating* in the event are:

  • ASH-TREE PRESS (Barbara and Christopher Roden, Canada)
  • ATOMIC FEZ PUBLISHING (Ian Alexander Martin, Canada)
  • VASILIS BABOURIS (Greece)
  • CHIZINE PUBLICATIONS (Sandra Kasturi and Brett Alexander Savory, Canada)
  • CORSAIR (James Gurbutt, UK)
  • DORIAN LITERARY AGENCY (Dorothy Lumley, UK)
  • GOLLANCZ/ORION (Jo Fletcher, UK)
  • JEMMA PRESS (Lefteris Stavrianos, Greece)
  • LITTLE, BROWN (Donna Condon, UK)
  • NIGHT SHADE BOOKS (Jeremy Lassen, USA)
  • PS PUBLISHING (Peter and Nicky Crowther, UK)
  • SHIEL LAND ASSOCIATES (Ian Drury, UK)
  • SNOWBOOKS (Emma Barnes, UK)
  • ZENO AGENCY LTD. (John Berlyne & John Parker, UK)

Only registered members of World Horror Convention 2010 will be allowed into PITCH BLACK, but instead of burdening publishers and agents with unpublished manuscripts (unless the publishers actually want them to!) authors must fill out and print the PITCH BLACK COVER SHEET on the convention website (www.whc2010.org/pitchblack02.html) for each project they wish to pitch. This sheet will have all the author’s contact details, together with a synopsis of the work being offered, and the author’s reasons why the person being ‘pitched to’ should publish, reprint or represent the writer and their work. No appointment is necessary, ‘pitchers’ just have to wait until there is an opening at the table they wish to pitch to. They will then be able to discuss their ideas in person, and those listening can take information away the information to decide if they want to follow it up at a later date.

Presenters should also consider bringing the first three chapters/100 pages of a novel, a short story from a collection, or the contents table/list of contributors for an anthology concept, in case they are asked to supply more supporting material.

THOSE PITCHING PROJECTS / WORKS / THEMSELVES ARE ASKED TO PLEASE REMEMBER THEY WILL NEED TO PRINT OFF MULTIPLE COPIES OF THE REGISTRATION FORM AND WORK SAMPLES IF THEY PLAN TO PITCH MORE THAN ONE PROJECT, OR TO APPROACH MORE THAN ONE REPRESENTATIVE.

With hundreds of new and established writers from all over the world attending the convention, this is a perfect opportunity for agents and publishers to find the next Big Genre Writer, or to exploit rights for the next Big Genre Best-Seller.

The Royal Albion Hotel’s “Bar Rogue”, location of PITCH BLACK (cick to enlarge/close)PITCH BLACK will run from NOON until 5:00 p.m. on THURSDAY, MARCH 25 in The Royal Albion Hotel’s Bar Rogue [image, right].

Throughout the event there will be a full bar, which will also sell tea, coffee and snacks, open in the immediate area. There is also a more informal area for meetings and follow-up discussions, along with an outdoor balcony area overlooking Brighton Pier and the historic beach-front.

PITCH BLACK is a unique opportunity for publishers, agents, writers and editors to get together in one place and help shape the future of the genre. If you work in the literature of the fantastic, then this is the one event you cannot afford to miss…

[* Please note: the convention is not responsible for the non-attendance of any of the participating publishers, editors or agents]

Artwork by David Gentry (Click to enlarge / close)It is with considerable relief that Atomic Fez announces it shall be publishing The Beautiful Red, the fine collection of excellent writing by Mr. James Cooper.

Following discussions over the past twenty-four hours, Mr. Cooper’s collection has been once again included in Atomic Fez’s list of offerings to be released in March of next year. All orders received for copies will be honoured as originally placed, and shall be fulfilled around the time of the title’s release in very late March of next year.

The title will, no doubt, find many fine reviews, as well as at least recognition with nominations for awards, given the quality of the work it contains, as well as due to the magnificent wrap-around cover-art for the paperback by Mr. David Gentry [front, right]. The collection also contains a foreword by the award-wining master of urban horror Mr. Christopher Fowler, who states therein:

It’s been quite a while since I’ve encountered stories like this, tales that ignore topical tastes in favour of a strange view of humanity that’s timeless, classical, and mysteriously sad.
–Christopher Fowler

Those who wish to sample some of Mr Cooper’s work, as well as see other art by Mr. Gentry, would be well-advised to purchase copies of the magazine Black Static, with special attention to seek out the novella-length “Eight Small Men” which will first appear in the February/March 2010 issue of Black Static [Issue №15], and also be included in the pages of The Beautiful Red.

Those individuals who seek the better supply of information in the world of horror writing can do no wrong by reading Black Static, which is published by TTA Press. While you’re on their site, have a look at their other magazine Interzone, which concerns the SF side of fiction. Those living in the UK can find copies of both at better newsagents, or request them. The best way to ensure reading them is to subscribe, no matter where you live. Having had the pleasure of reading two copies of both bi-monthlies, be assured that both the graphic design and written content is of superior quality and worth the cost.

Again, Atomic Fez is over-joyed by this turn of events, and apologizes for any confusion which the past few days saw. We wish Mr. Cooper much continued and well-deserved success with his writing, and are proud to be a part of its being made available to a discerning public at reasonable prices. Order your copy of The Beautiful Red by clicking on its title.

CLICK HERE to get more details and order copiesMike Mignola (creator of “Hellboy”) loves the latest novel from Rhys Hughes! Twisthorn Bellow is out in March of next year, and you can pre-order your copy today! Here’s what Mr. Mignola said:

Rhys Hughes is so completely his own creature that words fail when it comes to describing his work; ‘Rhys Hughesian?’ I don’t think that’s gonna fly. How about just ODD? But odd in the best possible way: the kind of odd that is, at times, goofy (I like the word ‘imbecilic’) and yet you are always keenly aware that he is a super genius, that he is toying with his reader like a madman (a genius madman having way too much fun) poking and prodding a little tiny octopus with a spoon. In a good way.

Mike Mignola; creator of Hellboy

Plus, Mr. Hughes has received this wonderful praise from the highly-respected, Seattle-based literary commentator S.T. Joshi in a recent text-book:

Highly original and chimerical monsters

S.T. Joshi

Needless to say, we’re right chuffed!

Probert-collection-headline

Finally, the final media release about John, James, John, and Rhys: the Four Fab Authors!

CLICK HERE to learn more about this titleToday Atomic Fez Publishing announces next year’s publication of Wicked Delights, a collection of horror tales written by Mr. John Llewellyn Probert (aka: “The Smart One”)! The fun-loving lads in Liverpool say it’s “more popular than Jesus!!”

In keeping with the approach of ‘making good books available at fair value’, the price of Wicked Delights in the newly re-mastered digital e-book format will be just $9.99 CAD/USD or £4.99 UKP. Additionally, copies will be available via the ‘Shortcovers’ software platform! Later, the handy-sized, 328-page jacket-less hardback will be only $39.99 CAD/USD or £22.99 UKP [plus shipping and handling]!!

In the author’s usual unsurpassable style, the volume opens with his introduction to the contents, as then closes with an afterword about the genesis each of the tales. Betwixt these fascinating pieces are eighteen works of short fiction which are stimulating on many levels to those open to these things.

Wicked Delights, the fifth collection of Mr. Probert’s writing, takes a slightly more adult tone than he has previous. While this is hardly an exercise in prurience, a certain saucy thread has been introduced to his already colourful tapestry of fictional craft. Read either with the lights on or off, but you may want to have someone else close by… should you feel the urge…

This collection of tales by Mr. Probert joins the rest of the Atomic Fez Catalogue, all to be formally released simultaneously on March 25th, timed to lovingly part you and your money at HorrorCon 2010:

As mentioned last week, the publishing date for Rhys’s book has been changed to match the others in March, with an official launch at Odyssey 2010 in Heathrow, England the following week-end.

Orders are being taken now on the Atomic Fez web-site: www.AtomicFez.com.

Buy early, and buy often!

CLICK HERE to learn more about this titleYes, book news continues to be made by the only nuclear-powered, hat-wearing publisher in the Dominion of Canada: Atomic Fez Publishing!

Today we announce next year’s publication of The Beautiful Red, a collection of horror tales written by Mr. James Cooper (aka: “The Cute One”)! The fun-loving lads in Liverpool say it’s “gear!!”

The digital form of The Beautiful Red will be released later this autumn on the Atomic Fez site, in a variety of DRM‑free e-book formats! The traditional, analogue, paper-based edition will be officially released to the cheering masses March 25th, 2010, with an official launch at World HorrorCon, held that week-end in Brighton, England.

In keeping with the approach of ‘making good books available at fair value’, the price of this novel in the newly re-mastered digital e-book format will be just $9.99 CAD/USD or £4.99 UKP. Additionally, copies will be available via the ‘Shortcovers’ software platform! Later, the handy‑sized, 300‑page paperback will be only $19.99 CAD/USD or £11.99 UKP [plus shipping and handling]!!

The book includes a foreword from Christopher Fowler. Mr. Fowler is the author of the award‑winning “Bryant & May” series of mysteries, and holds several world records for Parkour in his age category, as well as blue ribbons in both the “Best Tatting” and “Broderie Anglaise” categories for three consecutive years awarded by the Oregon Ladies’ Sewing Bee.

Mr. Fowler says this of the writing of James Cooper:

[James Cooper] is intent on stepping inside his characters, instead of simply describing them from the outside. He calibrates his effects instead of going for shocks. He’s clearly fascinated by the mournful realities (and dream‑states) of life and death. It’s been quite a while since I’ve encountered stories like this, tales that ignore topical tastes in favour of a strange view of humanity that’s timeless, classical, and mysteriously sad.

The Beautiful Red joins the March 25th release of Twisthorn Bellow¸ the latest novel by Mr. Rhys Hughes (aka: “The Funny One”); as well as The Terror and the Tortoiseshell, the début novel from Mr. John Travis (aka: “The Quiet One”). As mentioned last week, the publishing date for Rhys’s book has been changed to match the others in March, with an official launch at Odyssey 2010 in Heathrow, England the following week‑end.

The Terror and the Tortoiseshell is a noir–styled murder mystery with deft touches of both the Comedy and Science Fiction genres, but primarily it honours the classic hard-boiled detective novels of the 1940s.

While it’s hardly a rave, it’s at the very least more recognition than ever got before by some houses. And it’s all subjective, isn’t it?

pwk_logoTwisthorn Bellow Rhys Hughes. Atomic Fez (www.atomicfez.com), $24.99 paper (256p) ISBN 9780981159713

Hughes (Engelbrecht Again!) spins an absurdist tale of a supernatural defence agency protecting British interests at home and abroad from monstrous threats, the most monstrous being (of course) the French. Twisthorn Bellow is a bad-tempered golem accidentally soaked in nitroglycerin, assisted by a semi-vocal giant hand and a talking aborted fœtus named Miss Stake. Together, they recruit or eliminate other supernatural entities while fending off constant threats delivered unfailingly by a bicycle messenger who is also the president of France. Eventually, as narrated by the Eiffel Tower, they confront the chief villain in his subterranean lair beneath Strasbourg. Wordplay, fractured classical mythology, pop culture and homages to fellow authors, above all the late Philip Jose Farmer, are overwhelmed by heavy satire that turns the tone from gonzo to grim, delivering more temper tantrum than tomfoolery. (Sept.)

So there we are.

Rhys Hughes once again foists his mad tale-spinning ability upon the world with this brand‑new novel of monsters attacking all that is bad (musicians, Frenchmen… you know, those sort of people), including both Hellboy and Philip José Farmer in the story while he’s at it. When this author describes something as “this is the maddest thing I’ve ever written”, you know you’re in for something ‘special’. With this exciting cover by the talented Steve Upham you only get a slight taste of the adventures which await you within!

To reserve your copy, either head to the “STORE” on the site and pre-purchase using VISA, MC or PAYPAL; or e-mail Graphic used to foil SPAMto ensure a copy is ready to be sent as soon as they arrive from the printers.

978-0-9811597-1-3It may come as no surprise that France wants to take over the world again. But this time they plan to go much further and gain control of the spiritual dimensions too, making French the official language of the afterlife!

Twisthorn Bellow is a freshly baked golem who has fallen into a vat of nitroglycerin, turning him into a living stick of dynamite. As well as battling against monsters and rock musicians, he’s the only thing that can preserve and protect the glorious British Empire and prevent the French‑ification of the entire cosmos. But considering the French have all the best ideas and tunes, he doesn’t stand a soufflé in Hell’s chance!

How to Kill Fiends & Intimidate People:

  1. Set yourself a golem;
  2. Give that golem a piece of your mind;
  3. Unleash him on an unsuspecting world…

Atomic Fez Publishing will begin shipping copies in time for the official publishing date of September 18TH, 2009.

It comes in one ‘Trade’ edition as follows:

  • ISBN: 9780981159713
  • $24.99 (CAN/USA) – £14.99 (UK)
  • bound in a paperback biding

Twisthorn Bellow by Rhys Hughes; his new novel
and heart‑felt homage to the late Philip José Farmer

PRAISE FOR MR. HUGHES:

Rhys Hughes seems almost the sum of our planet’s literature… As well as being drunk on language and wild imagery, he is also sober on the essentials of thought. He has something of Mervyn Peake’s glorious invention, something of John Cowper Powys’s contemplative, almost disdainful existentialism, a sensuality, a relish, an addiction to the delicious. He’s as tricky as his own characters… He toys with convention. He makes the metaphysical political, the personal incredible and the comic hints at subtle pain. Few living fictioneers approach this chef’s sardonic confections, certainly not in English.

Michael Moorcock

Just beginning to read: saliva already forming on chin.
